The 4-Week MVP: A Real Build Plan (Not a Motivational Framework)
A founder called me two months ago. Smart guy, technical background, already had a Figma file with 47 screens. He wanted to "move fast." His timeline: four weeks to MVP.
I looked at the Figma file and told him he had six months of work sitting in there.
He pushed back. "But it's an MVP."
Here's the thing most people get wrong about MVPs: the word "minimum" doesn't mean what they think it means. They interpret it as a smaller version of their full vision. The product still has every feature — just slightly less polished. That's not a minimum viable product. That's a full product with corners cut. And when you try to build that in four weeks, you don't get a fast MVP. You get a broken prototype with technical debt baked in from day one.
Four weeks is a real timeline. I've done it. But only when we're disciplined about what "minimum" actually means.
First: What Are You Actually Validating?
Before any code gets written, you need to answer one question clearly: what is the single assumption this MVP exists to test?
Not ten assumptions. One.
Every feature that doesn't directly test that assumption is a distraction. I know that sounds obvious. It never feels obvious when you're looking at your own product. You start rationalizing. "Users will need onboarding, otherwise they won't get it." "We need the analytics dashboard or investors won't take us seriously." "The notifications system is core to the experience."
Maybe. But probably not in week one.
We took on a project last year — a workflow automation tool for small legal teams. The founder had mapped out 23 features for launch. When we sat down and asked "what are you actually testing?" the answer was simple: will legal teams pay to eliminate a specific manual data-entry task? That's it. That's the assumption.
We built three features. The core automation. A simple dashboard showing what it did. And a payment flow to capture the answer to the question: will they pay? Everything else got shelved. We shipped in 18 days. They had their first paying customer in week three.
That's what MVP discipline looks like. Not cutting corners on quality — cutting scope on everything that isn't the test.
The 4-Week Build Plan We Actually Use
Here's the honest breakdown. Four weeks, if you run it right.
Week 1: Foundation and Auth (Don't Skip This)
I've seen founders try to skip authentication to save time. Don't. A user system built badly in week one costs you a month of refactoring in week six. We use Clerk for auth on almost everything we build — it's enterprise-grade, it handles SSO, role management, and password security out of the box, and it takes less than a day to implement correctly.
Week one is also database schema. PostgreSQL. Properly normalized. With access controls. Again — this isn't where you cut time. This is the foundation everything sits on. We learned this the hard way when we inherited a platform from a client who'd built on Replit. Passwords stored in plain text. Auth failing intermittently. The cost of rebuilding that foundation was three months of work that should have been one week of doing it right upfront.
Week one deliverable: a running application, users can sign up and log in, core data models exist, deployed to a real cloud environment (we use Google Cloud Platform). Nothing exciting. Completely necessary.
Week 2: The Core Feature (Just One)
Whatever your MVP is actually testing — this is the week you build it. The one thing. Nothing else.
If you're building a booking platform, this is the booking flow. If you're building a content tool, this is the content generation feature. If you're building a scoring engine for a sports platform — yes, we built one of those in 10 weeks from a completely broken Replit prototype — this is the scoring logic.
The mistake founders make here is scope creep by justification. "We need user profiles before the core feature makes sense." Maybe. But maybe a minimal profile — name and email — is enough for the test. Push back on yourself hard here.
By the end of week two, a user should be able to experience the core value proposition. Not beautifully. But functionally.
Week 3: The One Supporting Feature That Makes the Core Usable
Here's where judgment comes in. Every core feature has one supporting element that makes it actually useful — not nice-to-have, but genuinely necessary for the test to work.
For a booking platform, it might be email confirmations. For a content tool, it might be the ability to save and retrieve outputs. For a payment product, it's the payment flow itself (non-negotiable — you can't test willingness to pay without a way to pay).
One. Pick one.
This week also includes basic error handling and edge case coverage. Not exhaustive QA — but the application shouldn't break on obvious inputs. This isn't polish. This is hygiene.
Week 4: Polish, Performance, and Putting It In Front of Users
The temptation in week four is to add features. Resist it.
Week four is making what you have feel real. Response times matter — 150–300ms API responses are achievable and they're the difference between something that feels like a product and something that feels like a prototype. Page load under 2 seconds. Mobile-responsive if your users are on phones. Basic analytics so you can actually measure whether the MVP is doing what you think it's doing.
This week also includes deployment configuration: uptime monitoring, basic error logging, auto-scaling if you expect load. We target 99.95% uptime from day one — not because the MVP needs to be perfect, but because if your product is down when the one investor you sent it to goes to try it, the story ends there.
End of week four: you have something real. Something you can put in front of users without apologizing for it. Something that answers the question you set out to answer.
The Two Things That Actually Kill 4-Week MVPs
It's never the technical complexity. In six years of doing this, I've never had a four-week timeline fail because the engineering was too hard.
It always fails for one of two reasons.
Reason one: the scope wasn't actually locked. Founders say "yes, just the core feature" in week one, then on Thursday of week two they send a message: "I was thinking — could we also add X? It's small." It's never small. The conversation needs to happen before week one starts, not during the build. We do a written scope document before a single line of code gets written. It sounds bureaucratic. It's not. It's the thing that makes four weeks possible.
Reason two: decisions get delayed. An MVP in four weeks means a decision needs to be made within 24 hours of being raised, every time. What color is the button? Which pricing model should we test first? What's the exact copy for the onboarding screen? If the founder takes three days to respond to a design question, we don't ship in four weeks. We've been doing async Loom walkthroughs for client reviews — five minutes of video that shows the work and asks specific questions — and it's cut our decision latency from 48 hours to under 6. Small thing, massive impact on timeline.
What a 4-Week MVP Isn't
It's not scalable. By design. The Navia platform we built — a full AI-powered marketing SaaS — took four months because we designed it for 100,000+ users from day one. That's not a four-week MVP situation. That's a founder who had validated the market and was ready to build the real thing.
A four-week MVP is not that. It's a question with a codebase attached to it. The moment you start designing the four-week build for 100K users, you've already lost the timeline.
What you're building in four weeks is a thing that answers a specific question, fast enough that the answer is still useful, with enough quality that the answer is trustworthy.
The Honest Commercial Part
Look — I'm writing this because it's a question I get constantly and I think most of the advice online is either too abstract ("validate before you build!") or too tactical without context ("use a no-code tool!"). I wanted to write something that actually shows how we think about it.
